When Diamondback (FANG), Coterra (CTRA), and Permian Resources (PR) report their own Q1 results, expect similar upstream price benefit language — potentially more concentrated given their pure-play Permian or gas-weighted positions.

The Timing Effects Trap

Chevron's $2.7–3.7 billion timing hit will dominate Q1 headlines. It shouldn't. The company explicitly states these effects are "expected to unwind in future periods and result in an overall net profit." In rising commodity price environments, mark-to-market losses on economic hedges are the accounting cost of locking in physical positions — the gain comes when delivery is completed. Analysts who strip timing effects from operating cash flow will get a cleaner read on underlying business performance.
